ITR Processing and Refund Time

The income tax department states that refund processing does not begin until the taxpayer e-verifies the return. The refund typically takes 4 to 5 weeks to appear in the taxpayer’s account.

If the taxpayer does not receive their return within this time frame, they should check their email for any notifications from the IT department regarding the refund and inquire about any discrepancies in their ITR. Using the procedure outlined below, the taxpayer can also check the status of their refund on the electronic filing.

As previously stated, there have been instances where the refund was obtained in a matter of hours and others where individuals have been waiting for their ITR refund for almost two years.

How check your ITR Refund Status

Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-Filing Portal.

Step 2: Log in with your User ID (PAN), password, and captcha.

Step 3: Go to ‘View Filed Returns’ under the ‘e-File’ tab.

Step 4: You’ll see a list of your filed ITRs, find the relevant Assessment Year and click ‘View Details’.

Step 5: The refund status will be shown under ‘Status’. You can also download the ITR-V or acknowledgement for more details.
